Taking advantage of a certain lethargy among the main body of cyclists during the 11th stage (between the Alps and the Pyrenees), he set off on his great adventure. After riding 96 miles on his own and at times leading the rest of the field by as much as 27 minutes, he finished the stage at Manosque 22:50 ahead of the Dutchman Gerben Kastens, and 23:07 ahead of the pack; it was one of the greatest gaps since the Second World War. And the average speed attained by this team-mate of Luis Doane — 23.5 miles p.h. — makes his exploit the more valid when his position overall is considered : he was in 76th place, some 56 minutes behind the leader Lucien Van Impe. This burst of speed by the Spaniard did not affect Albert Bourlon's record of 1947 when he set off on his own at the start of the 14th stage (Carcassonne to Luchon), bravely climbed the Col de Port and the Col du Portet d'Aspet nearly 30 minutes ahead of the field, and was still 16 minutes ahead of the others at the end of the stage, having ridden more than 150 miles alone.
