The 9 June 1973 crowd of more than 50,000 quieted to a hush after track announcer Dave Johnson sounded the familiar. It is now post time". Across the country, millions more people moved to the edge of their seats with their eyes glued to TV sets to watch the 105th running of the Belmont Stakes. As the gates clanged open for the eighth race of the day, Secretariat broke with a smooth stride. Jockey Ron Turcotte eased him toward the rail as they headed into the first turn of the race which would be once around the mile and a half Belmont Park oval. Along the backstretch, Secretariat had no trouble making the lead. Going into the far turn Sham, the horse running in second place, began to give up the chase and Secretariat widened his lead. Two, four, seven, ten lengths ahead. He pounded into the stretch to the thunderous applause of the throng crowded down at the rail. Fifteen, 20, 25, 30 lengths in front as he whisked passed the finish line. Secretariat had just won the third jewel in the Triple Crown, completing the mile-and-a-half Belmont Stakes in the American record time of 2:24. The victory, going with triumphs in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, made Secretariat the first Triple Crown winner since Citation turned the trick in 1948, and was only the ninth horse in all of thoroughbred history to win all three races. As a 2-year-old in 1972, Secretariat started in 9 races, won 7 and was the first of his age ever to be named Horse-of-the-Year. In 1973, he not only captured the Triple Crown, but also won 9 of 12 races, and earned a single-season record: 860,404 dollars. In the fall of 1973 he set a world record for the mile and an eighth, winning the Marlboro Cup in a time of 1:45 2/5. | | Photo Info | SECRETARIAT Foal of 1970, by Bold Ruler—Somethingroyal by Princequillo AWARDS AND RECORDS Starts and finishes in 1972 1st 9, 2nd 7, 3rd 1, 4th 0, Money won 456,404 dol.
