To this day, Anquetil remains the proud holder of a list of records which he owes to his innate talent and tactical gifts. A born leader, Anquetil always knew how to pace himself, and that ability helped him take on such formidable adversaries as Charly Gaul, Federico Bahamontes, and Raymond Poulidor in the mountain climbs. His display of self-control has paid off in a string of championships. In 1964 Anquetil scored a double victory in the footsteps of his idol Fausto Coppi, by winning the Giro of Italy and the Tour de France. The legendary speed of this excellent long-distance cyclist which seemed to point him toward a track-racing career, made him a specialist in time- trial competition. He won the Grand Prix des Nations nine times between 1953 and 1966. He greatly improved on the records, no matter what the distance-140 km, 100 km, or 72 km. In 1956 at the Vigorelli of Milan he was clocked at 46.159 km per hr, breaking the world record set in 1942 by Coppi and displaying a gain of 311 m. But Anquetil's greatest exploit came in 1965, when on the heels of a victory in the tough Critérium du "Dauphine Libéré" he finished first in the Bordeaux—Paris race.
