His drive to win was evident in the Pyrenees and the Alps: he came out ahead in two mountain laps, he did a solo climb on the slopes of the Izoard on July 14, and he beat Eddy Merckx by 2:47. Thévenet, a farmer's son from Saôneet-Loire, lived up to the expectations of Gaston Plaud, who sponsored him in the Peugeot-BP team in 1970. Thévenet, whose amazing potential was too often held back by unfortunate accidents, always managed to bounce back. For example, his success at Mount Ventoux and at the Ballon d'Alsace in 1972 came after a serious fall in the Aubisque. Thévenet made a name for himself at the age of 22 in his very first competition, the 1970 Tour de France. His victory at La Mongie illustrated his talents as a climber and was a forerunner of many others. By 1973 the warm-hearted cyclist had become French National Champion. That same year he was placed second in the Criterium du "Dauphine Libéré" and in the Tour de France. His 1974 season was ruined by shingles, which jeopardized his career. But he regained his confidence after a second-place showing, behind the great Eddy Merckx, in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race in May 1975. Thévenet paved the way for his first Tour de France victory in the Criterium du "Dauphine Libéré", pulling out all the stops in the passes of the Chartreuse region. But his success was short-lived. ln 1976, still dazzled by his recent triumph and weakened by an attack of viral hepatitis, the super-cyclist reluctantly decided to give up the chase in the 19th lap. | | Photo Info | BERNARD THÉVENET Born Jan. 10, 1948, at the Pou farm in Saint-Julien-de-Civry, Saône-et-Loire, FRA AWARDS AND RECORDS French National Champion, junior amateur ranking, 1968 First place in the Tour de Romandie, 1972 French National Championship, professional ranking, 1973 Second place in the Tour de France, 1973 First place in the National Criterium, 1974 First place in the Tour de Catalogne, 1974 First place in the Criterium du "Dauphine Libéré" 1975-76 Winner of the Tour de France, 1975 Bernard Thévenet on his way to victory in the 1975 Tour de France | | Copyright | © 1977, Editions Rencontre S.A., Lausanne Photo Presse-Sport-Explorer Printed in Japan 03 005 01-10
