NameFranz Beckenbauer
SubtitleSelected 100 Times
Number56-23
InfoOn 26 September 1965 in Stockholm, West Germany defeated Sweden 2-1 and became serious contenders for the final round of the 1966 World Cup. Meanwhile, a new 20-year-old called Franz Beckenbauer had begun to make his mark. His 14th selection was for the World Cup final on 30 July 1966 in London, but England won. In Mexico, 1970, this Bavarian was chosen for five out of the six matches played by the German team. Then, on 9 September 1970, in Nurnberg, when Germany beat Hungary 3-1, Franz Beckenbauer wore the national colours for the 44th time. A brilliant sweeper, he was selected for all the German national matches from then until 20 June 1976, when Germany faced Czechoslovakia in Belgrade for the final of the European Nations Cup. The event marked Beckenbauer's hundredth selection. In Brussels on 18 June 1972, the Germans scored three goals against the USSR, against none in reply. Beckenbauer was part of the team which won the fourth European Nations Cup. In Munich, on 7 July 1974, the Dutchman Johann Neeskens opened the score with a penalty. Paul Breitner followed suit, and scored the equalizer. By half-time, Gerd Muller had scored the winning goal. This result meant that Franz Beckenbauer's 85th cap was his finest. Doubtless Franz Beckenbauer would have liked to celebrate his hundredth selection by winning the European Nations Cup once more. Czechoslovakia went into an early lead, 2-0; then Germany clocked up two goals of their own. The match went into extra time but neither side scored. After going into penalties, Panenka scored with the fifth kick for Czechoslovakia and gave his team a well-deserved victory.
